Almost 10 years of Mack Brown at Texas

This is the 3rd post in the “Ticket Stub” series (click here and here for the first 2).
This is the ticket stub from Mack Brown’s first game as head coach of THE University of Texas. The game was won easily by Texas, 66-36 and was for the most part not very memorable outside of being Brown’s first game at the helm.
Next year will be the 10th year of Mack’s tenure at the 40 Acres and while he has raised the program to national prominence, and even won a national title, questions still linger in regards to his ability to coach. That he is a fine recruiter as any is beyond question, but can he coach?
Without further ado I step aside to what I think is a well-written and accurate post on the Mack Brown Era at Texas,

Before Mack:
Marginal recruiting, zero NFL players, mediocre records, ATM was dominating us for 10 years, and we had a half empty stadium with everyone wearing non-orange.
After Mack:
Great recruiting, NFL players all over the place, good records, ATM is in turmoil, a passionate fan base, two Heismans (Vince should have won it, so I am counting it), national title, we are adding on to the stadium with no end in site.
All I am saying is that when you look at where Mack has brought us it is an incredible transition.
Yes we need changes…yes we need Greg Davis gone, but Mack is the man. He should have the job as long as he wants it.

I was so focused on the horns underachieving during the Roy Williams – Chris Simms era, that I failed to truly enjoy the development of the GREATEST COLLEGE FOOTBALL player EVER! I didn’t realize it until 4th down against USC. So from now on I will savor every moment and just enjoy the ride….as if we are underdogs against a Virginia team and Dawson is about to kick a 50yarder into a stiff wind.

Hey, I saw Mack’s speech it’s embedded in the Rose Bowl DVD, how great was that? How many coaches would make that speech after winning the national title?
Though I am tired of seeing OU pile up conference championships when the only times UT can win one is when a transcendent talent like VY graces the 40 Acres with his greatness.

Do you think Mack’s tenure will mirror Lloyd Carr’s at Michigan?

I think it resembles Carr’s tenure more and more every day. The decline in the talent level of the players from 2005 to 2007 is frankly shocking. We did not have a single true difference maker on the defense this year – we had 4 or 5 on that 2005 team. On offense, our one true superior talent was Jermichael Finley, and Greg Davis on sporadically showed he know how to use him.
It’s pathetic, really, and there’s no relief in sight. Absent major changes in the coaching staff, we are staring 7-5 right in the face against next year’s schedule, which will be vastly tougher than the line up of patsies we faced this season.
