“Tibet will Rise Again”?

I have observed with no small degree of fascination, the obsession people have with “freeing” Tibet. I’ve wondered if the same people who vehemently oppose war would oppose it if the goal was “liberating” the region from China.

Having spoken with a Chinese co-worker in the past, he conveyed to me that the Western press oversimplifies things and that Westerners have no business meddling in Chinese internal affairs. Needless to say, he’s not the world’s biggest Dalai Lama fan.

The Dalai Lama, of course, is the exiled leader of the Tibetan people. The current one is referred to as “His Holiness”. How a Buddhist is addressed with such a moniker is puzzling, given the fact that Buddhism, to my limited knowledge, doesn’t deal in “holiness” but I digress.

Why do I bring this up? Because the Chinese government has done something which will not endear it to either the “Free Tibet” crowd or much anyone else in the good ol’ U.S. of A.

They went out on a limb and made the following analogy,

Lincoln:Secessionist South::China:Tibet under the Dalai Lama

No they didn’t, well actually yes they did. Check it out here.

How long before the following composite makes its way to the streets of Dixieland?

For masterfully mediating the Beer Summit, of course!

Jimmy Kimmel Does the Unthinkable

Here’s the proof:

I heard one of the local sports radio guys grill POTUS for wearing jeans at the All-Star Game. Huh?

The anti-jean rant made me think of a scathing column conservative pundit George Will wrote against America’s love affair with blue jeans:

Forever in Blue Jeans

Get a grip folks, it’s just denim.

As for the ceremonial first pitch, I know 44’s throw to the plate was as pretty and fluid as 43’s jump shot.

I Have a Dream… A Capitalist Dream

From Dr. King’s famous and inspiring speech,

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.

Contrary to popular opinion, Barack Obama’s election to the Presidency was for the most part, a betrayal of Dr. King’s dream. Why? Because his historic victory was buttressed by the many who voted for Sen. Obama, not because of his character, but because of the color of his skin (Columnist Bret Prelutsky makes the same point in Mourning in America).

Then there is this,

King family seeks to cash in on MLK-Obama items

What kind of items? For example, t-shirts like one the woman on the left is wearing in this picture:

Is it just me or does the shot look like a capture from one of those annoying ‘lower your interest rate’ web ads?

According to the story, MLK’s nephew, Isaac Newton Farris Jr., who is the head of the King Center, said this about the merchandise in question,

Some of this is probably putting food on people’s plates. We’re not trying to stop anybody from legitimately supporting themselves, but we cannot allow our brand to be abused.

Our brand, huh? Intere$ting…

On a related note, here is a picture from L.A.,

Wow, some enterprising soul hit a trey from the corner by sneaking Malcolm X into a shirt. I wonder if his people are going to throw their hat into the ring.

The $us$pen$e is riveting…

POTUS, Starring Barack Obama as Lorenzo Lamas…

The Secret Service must be big fans of Renegade, a ridiculously campy mid-90s TV show starring Lorenzo Lamas as a bounty hunter. Here’s a screenshot:

I’m basing this on the fact that, according to this story, “Renegade” is the Secret Service-assigned code name of President-elect Barack Obama.

I cannot begin to imagine why they would pick this moniker, given what the term means according to Webster’s:

1 : a deserter from one faith, cause, or allegiance to another
2 : an individual who rejects lawful or conventional behavior

Even more interesting is what is found in the Wikipedia entry for “Renegade”,

Renegade (Middle Ages), a term for a fallen Christian or a knight without allegiance.

To quote Disney’s March Hare (below), “Verrrrry interesting…”

I’m sure the 2 were very cordial though I would have loved to see what would have happened if Pres. Bush had kicked it up a notch and gone diplomatic (below) on the President-elect.
