Could CS Lewis be talking about Conservatives and Liberals?

Something to think about especially in an election year,

I feel a strong desire to tell you–and I expect you feel a strong desire to tell me–which of these two errors is the worse. That is the devil getting at us. He always sends errors into the world in pairs–pairs of opposites. And he always encourages us to spend a lot of time thinking which is the worse. You see why, of course? He relies on your extra dislike of the one error to draw you gradually into the opposite one. But do not let us be fooled. We have to keep our eyes on the goal and go straight between both errors. We have no other concern than that with either of them.

i’m guessing this is your clever response to an emotional blog rant about a popular presidential candidate???

Good thought Laz. Too often times we are inept at straddling the fence or walking the line. We like to overcompensate and go from extreme to extreme. History is inundated with examples of this.

    Thanks for sharing this quote.

Well it’s Mr. Lewis’ response not mine, but it seems that the Don’s words are tailor-made to be a salve to emotional blog rants of any stripe and persuasion.

    J. Lewis’ immediate context was “Totalitarianism v. Individualism”, but I thought it applied to our current pairs of opposites.
