Is Gianna Jessen’s Survival from Abortion a Political Statement?

My dear wife volunteered at a Crisis Pregnancy Center before she had our son, and there she counseled expectant mothers who had an “unwanted” pregnancy.

Of course, given the fact that the Center is a Christian institution they did not encourage or even suggest abortion as a viable option, but neither did they coerce or pressure women who sought their services, despite what some so-called “pro-choice” activists might want the public to believe.

At some point, my wife ran across the story of Gianna Jensen and picked up a copy of her book, “Gianna: Aborted… and lived to tell about it”.

Recently, Townhall columnist Jon Sanders wrote a column,
“Aborted and Lived To Tell About It”, in which he writes about Gianna’s case (among other things).

He briefly retells Ms. Jessen’s story,

The most well-known abortion survivor is Gianna Jessen, who survived saline injection at seven and a half months. Jessen suffers cerebral palsy as a result, but she sings, runs marathons, and uses her example to fight abortion, traveling the world speaking out against the legal medical procedure that very nearly killed her. She has testified before state legislatures, Congress, and the House of Lords. Her amazing story can be read in Jessica Shaver’s book Gianna: Aborted … and Lived to Tell About It.

Sanders also retells what happened last year when Jessen appeared before the Colorado House of Representatives,

Last year Jessen made a memorable appearance before the Colorado House of Representatives. She was invited to sing the national anthem there by Rep. Ted Harvey, R-Highlands Ranch. Her affliction caused her to lose her balance, and her nerves caused her to falter, and everyone present joined with her to encourage her.

When she was done, Harvey introduced her to the chamber. He spoke of her cerebral palsy from a traumatic birth, her life in foster homes before being adopted, how she struggled even to lift her head, then crawl and walk, and how she now runs in marathons to raise awareness of cerebral palsy. Harvey called her a modern day hero, and Jessen received a standing ovation.

Harvey wasn’t done. On the docket that day was a resolution to honor the 90th anniversary of the Rocky Mountain Planned Parenthood clinic. Harvey then revealed the cause of Jessen’s cerebral palsy: the failed abortion at a Planned Parenthood clinic. He was gaveled down, of course, but he told the Speaker, “I just wanted to put a face to what we are celebrating today.”

House Democrats fumed. Majority Leader Alice Madden told the Denver Post that Harvey had been “amazingly rude to use a human being as an example of his personal politics.”

Personal politics? Are you kidding me? Do you think Gianna views abortion as “personal politics”?

Madden’s comment validates what the Apostle Paul wrote to the Romans,

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness…

Surely Madden suppresses the truth that abortion is murder any way you cut it, whether it is to salve her conscience or for political gain it makes little difference. Her dismissive comment demonstrates that supporting abortion is not primarily a sign of political malaise but of spiritual malaise.

Sanders also quotes Jessen in what is an all too apparent moment of clarity,

Jessen, who presumably would have known she had been used, told the Post, “We need to discuss the humanity of it [abortion]. I’m glad to be able to speak up for children in the womb. If abortion is about women’s rights, where were my rights?”

When outright murder is practiced and endorsed under the banner of “women rights” something is seriously wrong.

Some speak out (invoking justice) against the alleged torture of men who would seek to harm others, yet when it comes to the most helpless amongst us (the unborn), these same folk who cry out for justice, endorse the murder of these little ones, all in the name of “women’s rights”, of course.

Thought you might want to know, Ted Harvey is running for Congress this year. You can read more about it here at

Ted has been a pro-life hero in the Colorado Legislature, and as you’ve seen from the Gianna Jessen story, he’s not afraid to stand up and do what’s right.

A sign of the times we live in. It’s so sad.
Gianna has an amazing story, doesn’t she?
    Thanks for sharing this.

Ted Harvey is obviously a very courageous man, and I really admire him for what he did that day. I read his story of what was going on in his mind that day, etc. If only we would all have the courage to stand for what is right and good.
