Thought Provoking Bright Eyes Lyric

As we reach adulthood, the music of one’s youth is still prevalent in our lives. This happened in previous generations, hence the existence of “oldies” stations on the FM dial. I am no exception, the majority of the music in the iPod is from the ’90s.

The onus to keep us afresh of current artists most often falls on younger siblings. My youngest sister has performed this role admirably in our case. Last Father’s Day, she gave me Bright Eyes’ I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning.

This is from one of the songs (“We Are Nowhere, and It’s Now”) in the album,

If you hate the taste of wine
Why do you drink it till you’re blind?

And if you swear that there’s no truth and who cares
How come you say it like you’re right?

Why are you scared to dream of God
When it’s salvation that you want?

You see stars that clear have been dead for years
But the idea just lives on…

Not to say that I agree with the artist’s worldview, as perceived from the rest of the album, but I thought the above was thought-provoking.
