Is this The University of Texas or the University of Miami?

One of the things that makes me proud (relax, not in the bad way) of being a fan (though the diploma on the wall leaves me little choice) of the University of Texas football team, is the way Coach Mack Brown (the guy on the left) runs that program.

Mack is the epitome of class, as he showed when he was lambasted for being unable to win the ‘big one’. For winning numerous “recruiting national championships”, which led his detractors to gloss him, “Mr. February”. Well all that stopped at the end of the 2005 season when the Longhorns won the National Championship, showing that nice guys don’t always finish last, but in fact can and do become champions.

And who can forget his words to his team after they beat USC in the 2006 Rose Bowl?

I don’t want this to be the best thing that’s ever happened in your life. When you’re 54, I don’t want you to say “Winning a football game is the best thing that ever happened in my life.

Though there is no doubt in my mind that Mack is still class all the way, the recent rash of Longhorns who have had run-ins with the law makes us UT fans wonder just what kind of kids Mack is recruiting. Is he sacrificing character guys so he can get guys who might be more talented but whose character is questionable?

Since the beginning of this summer 5 Longhorns players have been arrested and booked on assorted charges:

  • Linebacker Dre Jones and safety Robert Joseph (aggravated robbery)
  • Linebacker Sergio Kindle and defensive end Henry Melton (drunken driving)

Now I do not have blinders on and pretend these are isolated incidents. When I was a student there, Heisman Trophy Winner Ricky Williams got picked up for something or other. A couple of years later, Cedric Benson also faced some legal troubles, as did star defensive back Cedric Griffin, and who could forget Ramonce Taylor’s fall from grace? (Though Taylor was kicked off the team, he is making himself eligible for next year’s draft.)

What is going on Mack, you do realize that you’re the coach of Texas and not Miami right?
