Patriotism, Ingredient Three

On to Lewis’ third ingredient of Patriotism:

The third thing is not a sentiment but a belief: a firm, even prosaic belief that our own nation, in sober fact, has long been, and still is markedly superior to all others.

Some people limit patriotism as a whole to this one ‘ingredient’. I would venture to say that in some circles, patriotism is avoided like the plague because it is seen as putting on airs about one’s own place of birth.

Lewis closes this section with this venerable quote,

[This third ingredient] however can produce asses that kick and bite. On the lunatic fringe it may shade off into that popular Racialism which Christianity and science equally forbid

I suppose he might be referring to the Third Reich.
