Soccer is not a spectator sport in Italy

I know NFL fans here in the States can get pretty rowdy during games. I also know that some fans of championship teams (see Detroit Pistons and Michigan State Spartans) tend to riot and turn cars over after a title is won.

This story coming out of Italy has to top the charts. A policeman was killed during a fight that broke out during an Italian league game. The government has stepped in and in the meantime, Italian League teams (like the Florida Marlins) might have to play in front of a lot of fans dressed up as empty stadium seats.

What is it about fútbol that brings out the ‘best’ in Europeans?
