Look both ways and turn your iPod off

According to this story, a New York State Senator is proposing a bill which would require iPod users to take off their earphones before crossing the street. If one does not do so one could get hit with a $100 fine.

The bill also applies to cell phones, blackberries, PSP’s, and assorted electronic devices. The senator makes his case by pointing out 2 cases in which iPod users were killed as they walked onto the street. Is this government trying to overreach itself or good old fashioned prevention?

This story makes me smile. This legislator is proposing this because two people have been hit by cars while listening to mp3 players. That is not a result of the electronic device, it is a result of stupidity. We learned in kindergarten that you look both ways before crossing the street. If you don’t do that, you’re going to get killed, ipod or not.
You can pass all the laws you want, but you cannot legislate stupidity.

    Insightful as always Jason.

Well darn it, Jason! I was going to suggest a law be passed prohibiting stupidity. 😉
