Has Ann Coulter read Colossians?

5 Conduct yourselves with wisdom toward outsiders, redeeming the time. 6 Let your speech always be gracious, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person.” — Colossians 4:5-6

Hmmm… These are Paul’s instructions regarding interaction with outsiders, that is those who do not follow Christ. In verse 5, he tells us what to do and in verse 6 how to do it.

What to do? Live your lives or walk with wisdom toward outsiders… Be prudent. Redeeming the time… Don’t waste time, yours or theirs.

How to do it? Our speech should always be gracious:

Gracious

  1. pleasantly kind or courteous
  2. characterized by good taste

if our speech toward unbelievers is not gracious, we are wasting time (to tie in verse 5). Why? Because they will tune us out if we are condescending, rude, sarcastic, or any other form of unkind speech. This result serves no one and therefore is a waste of everyone’s time.

“so that you will know how you should respond to each person”

an ungracious attitude not only wastes time but leads to temper-driven arguments which more often than not result in resentment and bitterness.

A mind engulfed by emotion will get muddled and stop thinking clearly. The first casualty of such a mind is wisdom, the very thing which Paul asks us to conduct ourselves with. Without it how will we know how to ‘respond to each person?’

BE GRACIOUS… the Ann Coulter approach, one laden with sarcasm and biting wit is ineffective in light of what Paul tells us here in this text.

Her words (she claims to be Christian) are not consistent with her actions (her style is ungracious by definition)… before one is tempted to dump on her for this, how easy is it for one to fall into the same trap?

One Response to Has Ann Coulter read Colossians?

  1. hmm, that is a very thought provoking and somewhat convicting blog entry. I’m going to have to dwell on those Scripture references for a bit. Thanks.
