Dead to what?

When a person declares another person as ‘dead to them’ what are the ramifications? The former lives his life as if the other did not exist. Interactions between the 2 people cease and the relationship (whatever it was) will wither and die.
In the book of Colossians, Paul writes:
“Therefore, consider the members of your earthly body as dead to fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed which amounts to idolatry.” 3:5
Followers of Christ are called out by Paul to consider themselves to be dead to these things. Would dabbling in these fit what Paul is saying here? Not unless you did some amazing textual acrobatics, which have been done to nullify YHWH’s Word in regards to other matters, but I digress.
