Life Wasted

A life wasted?  what is it?  what does one look like?  I’m sure there are many answers to do this as there are people.  To some, the soldiers dying in Iraq are lives wasted because they believe the war is nothing more than a moneymaker for big business.  To others, it’s Doc Gooden not achieving his potential after being blessed with inmeasurable talent.

I would answer:   all those babies that have been aborted since Roe v. Wade (around what? 40 million?  Someone correct me if I’m mistaken).  This law has caused more death than all religions combined, who says we’re not making progress as a species?

YHWH has a different view of what a life wasted is.  We are told:

“Set your mind on the things above not on the things that are on earth.”  Colossians 3:2

Yes, this sounds like pie-in-the-skyology but it really isn’t.  There is an example given of a certain kind of person whose mind is on earthly things.  In his letter to the Philippians, Paul, writes of certain people whom he calls, “enemies of the cross of Christ.”  These folk have certain characteristics:

1.  their end is destruction

2.  their god is their appetite (desires)

3.  their glory is their shame

4. their minds are set on earthly things

Hmmm, this sounds familiar.  This was me about oh, 3 years ago.  The path I walked on led to destruction, the object of my worship was my desires, the shameful acts I did I gloried in, and most definitely, my mind was set on earthly things, which last the short time we walk this earth, and in most cases even shorter than that.

The mind set on the things above does not forget the things on earth in a delusional stupor.  The mind set on things above looks to Christ who is seated at the right hand of the Father.  It is then and only then that one can be effective here on earth to do the works which YHWH has prepared in advance for one to do.  I like what CS Lewis said on the matter:

“The Christians who did the most for the present world were just those who thought most of the next…  Aim at Heaven and you will get earth thrown in:  aim at earth and you will get neither.”

Yes I’m aware that those who don’t follow Christ perform many acts of charity and kindness.  Yet, without belief in Him, these acts are all for naught in the eternal perspective, which really is the only one rooted in Reality.
