Chuck Norris and the ‘Lost’ Gospels

It has recently come to my attention that there's a fascination with jokes about Mr. Norris.  The origin of this craze appears to be a mystery but here's a few samplers:

When the boogeyman goes to sleep every night, he checks his closet for Chuck Norris.

Chuck Norris doesn't read books. He stares them down until he gets the information he wants.

Chuck Norris does not get frostbite. Chuck Norris bites frost.

Chuck Norris can slam a revolving door.

Chuck Norris is currently suing NBC, claiming Law and Order are trademarked names for his left and right legs.

There are many more of these jokes in circulation and it's only a matter of time before a book is compiled.

If one reads Chuck's autobiography or even a biography one will not find these fantastic feats of strength and virility attributed to the man.  I have not read either his autobiography or biography but I'm pretty sure they present a fairly balanced account of the man's life.  The things attributed to him by these jokes are more the product of a different set of presuppositions about the man, mainly that he's got uberhuman strength and in some of them he's not human at all.

This Chuck Norris phenomenon is an illustration, albeit a strange one, to the relationship between the 4 Gospels and the Gnostic Gospels.  The 4 Gospels are biographical accounts given to us by eyewitnesses of the ministry of Jesus.

Whereas the Gnostic Gospels (or as some call them, the 'lost gospels') are magical and fantastic accounts of Jesus' life much in the spirit of these Chuck Norris jokes.  While they are 'interesting' I'm afraid they're not based on truth (oh no I've said a dirty word) and stem from erroneous presuppositions about Jesus the Christ.

It is a shame that people have to bash someone just because he or she if diffrent.
Many have praied for Chuck and his family, I for one am very disheatened to find
the scum of this earth bashing this man.
It sickens me to think that someone who has given so much of him self to help others
is the point of sick jokes,
When the trumpet sounds these people will see just how funney they realy are.
Our Messiah will shame the ones doing this and I pray they get taken to the wood
    shed for good.
